How to Not Get Cramps when Running

Question: I absolutely love the website - It's extremely informative! Here's my question: I am leaving for Navy boot camp in 2 months. I need to start getting in shape. However, I run 1.5 miles with my recruiters 2 times a week, but it seems like I'm always out of breath or I have a cramp. Can I have some tips for running correctly, and what I should be eating before the run? What foods will give me energy? Thanks! Elizabeth

Answer: Elizabeth, A lot of times what causes cramps is actually having too much in your stomach while running. Liquids give me cramps really bad. It's best to run on a fairly empty stomach, having eaten a light snack about 45 minutes before the run. This food should consist of complex carbohydrates and some protein. Check out the article in the Articles section on running cramps and how to deal with them for more info. Good luck in boot camp. I hear it's real nice there.
