Shin Splints Treatment and Prevention

Question: Hey, I love your website!!! I was wondering what I should do for shin splints. I have been running for a while and have recently got them. I try to run about 1-2 miles, 3-4 days a week. I usually run on a treadmill and occasionally the track. Thanks for any help you can give!!!! Rebecca

Answer: Rebecca, Shin splints is an overuse injury, causing inflammation to the deep muscles surrounding your tibia bone. For relief of shin splints, follow the RICE method: rest, ice, compression and elevation; and ice-massage (freeze water in a small dixie cup and massage the affected area until the ice melts). Also, strengthen and stretch the affected leg muscles. Stop running until the pain subsides.
