Music for Working Out at the Gym

By Fitness Plus Magazine

The benefits of music on exercise seem to be self-explanatory. According to the University of Florida Health and Human Performance Department, "There are studies showing that music can improve exercise and athletic performance by providing a distraction from the boredom and discomfort associated with some activities and by improving mood, confidence, self-esteem and motivation."

Even so, there are times when going for a run or a hike with only the sounds of nature as accompaniment make for a great workout. Music, whether man-made or natural, gives you energy to keep going, offers a rhythm to run/walk/blade/whatever to, and gives you something to think about besides your feet screaming at you to stop!

Here are some song lists of CDs I have made to run to, for my gym to play, or for spinning classes I have taught. I have also included a number of song lists from friends.

Disclaimer: Just by listing the songs here does not imply that I like all of them, so please don't write to complain about the music -- instead make your own CD and email me the songlist.

Most CDs are 90 or 100 min. long, unless otherwise noted.
