Eating 20 Grams of Carbs a Day

Question: Hi. I'm 5'7", 230 lbs. and recently started a diet that consists of eating whenever you're hungry but not to eat any more than 20 carbohydrates a day. Is that healthy? What would you recommend? Big Man

Answer: Big Man, I always recommend people drink more water -- at least 8 cups per day. I like the eating only when you're hungry part, but I would recommend a more permanent eating schedule. Fewer than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day is a schedule that's not very easy to live with forever. In fact, the weight you lose on a diet like that would come back when you start eating like you used to. Try not to think about how much you eat, as much as the kinds of foods you're eating. Check out the Articles section for more information on foods that are (and are not) nutrient-dense, so you'll be familiar with them. The good foods on this list are more likely to keep you satiated (not hungry) for longer.
