Exercise Before or After Breakfast

Question: Time is scarce in the morning, but if I get up early, I can fit in an hour of good stretching and my treadmill. My Q is this... I don't know which is better or more efficient -- should I wake up, eat breakfast and then workout? or should I immediately workout and then eat? My current routine is to wake, drink 3/4 mug coffee, work out, and eat. It seems to be okay but could I do better? Also, first time at your site and I love it. I will be back weekly! Brenna

Answer: Hi Brenna, Thanks for your compliments on my site! In answer to your question, it really depends on the individual. I personally don't do as well in my workouts if I don't eat, but also don't like to feel full during a workout. I usually eat half of my breakfast (1/2 banana and 1/4 cup cottage cheese) before a morning workout and the rest afterwards. Try it a few different ways and see how you feel. That's what matters most -- what makes you feel and perform the best. I'm glad to hear you're stretching, too. That's an essential component to keeping at it. Keep up the great work!
