Exercising with a Pulled Muscle

Question: I have managed to pull something in my right arm. I have tried gentle full-range stretching, and I swim 1/2 mile three days a week. Today, I felt too sore to even swim. What exercises would you suggest to lessen the pain so I can get back to swimming? I can't believe I hurt it swimming, but I don't remember pulling it in another way. Thanks, Pat

Answer: Pat, Swimming involves a lot of movement where your arm moves overhead, which can cause a shoulder-joint impingement. This is a common injury for swimmers. Rest and ice compression are the best treatments until the pain goes away. You should see a physical therapist to determine what the pain is more specifically, and the P.T. will prescribe stretching and strengthening movements to hopefully prevent such injuries in the future.
