Female Weight Training and Size Gain

Fitness Question: I'm 52 years old, 5'3", and I weigh 155 lbs. I have done aerobic exercise for about 17 years. Recently I joined a fitness club with the purpose of losing 5-10 lbs. She put me on cardiovascular work plus weights. In the first 8 weeks I gained 7 lbs. (to what I weigh now). My legs were already firm from aerobics, and now some of my skirts and dresses are too tight in that area. Also, some of my blouses are too tight. Did I just make my muscles bigger? How can I correct this problem? Tammy

Answer: Tammy, Nix the weights for a while. Then, after a rest, I would try decreasing the amount of weight you're using while strength training, and increasing the repetitions. You must alter your diet and keep up the cardio.
