Getting Back to High School Weight

Question: I'm a mother of four children and in high school I was 135 lbs. Is there any way possible for me to be that weight again? I'm only 24 years old and currently at 176 pounds. I feel so hopeless. Also, I have a lot of loose skin at the abdominal area. Could I ever get that off, even if I lost 41 pounds? I just get so discouraged. Please help! Allene

Answer: Allene, Fortunately you're still young and you can make a big difference for your many remaining years. To shrink the fat cells that you gained during pregnancy, try these simple strategies: Eat most of your food during the day (not after 6 p.m., if possible). Make most of your food choices from lean meats, soy products, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Learn to eat when your body signals that it needs fuel by making you hungry, and stop eating when you no longer feel hunger. Then brush your teeth to signal to your body that you're done eating. Exercise aerobically on a consistent basis (3 to 5 times per week for at least half an hour each time). Drink 8 cups of water daily. Don't lose hope! Ask your family for encouragement, which will help you reach your goals. Your excess skin should decrease as your fat cells shrink. Keep at it - it's not easy, but it's not impossible.
