How Long to Digest Carbs before Workout

Question: Hi, How long do carbohydrates take to be digested and energy released? I eat a portion of pasta before going training each day in the gym (the idea being that it will help increase my energy for the work out). I have tried various lengths of time between eating and workout, none seem to give any good results. Am I on the right track at all with this plan? Your comments would be very much appreciated. Joe

Answer: Joe, I would recommend eating a protein snack instead of eating carbohydrate-loaded pasta. Instead of giving you "energy," pasta gives your body a morphine-like effect, which is exactly the opposite of what you want. High-density carbohydrates are better after high-intensity exercise to replace glycogen depleted muscles. Protein has a better immediate effect in your energy level.
