How to Start a Fitness Program

Question: I always wanted a personal trainer and maybe you are the answer. I have had a weight problem for several years. I'm 44 years old, 5'1", I weigh 170 and don't exercise at all. Where do I start? Drinking 8 glasses of water a day? Trying your menu plans? Walking daily? Nancy

Answer: Nancy, You named the three things I recommend to people who are beginning to exercise: drink at least 8 cups of water per day, develop the skill of listening to (and following) your body's hunger signals, and walk briskly daily. Even if it's only 10-15 minutes a day to start, it's more important to just get started on a schedule you can stick to easily. Every couple of weeks, as you get stronger, add 10 minutes or so to your walk.
