I Have Gained Weight Since Starting Exercising

Question: Somehow I've managed to gain 5 pounds since I started exercising. This is a big mystery to me. I've been running a significant amount and lifting 3 days a week doing circuit training (high intensity). My diet has been moderate. Eating fish, chicken, whole grains, fruits, vegtables and very little sweets. I'm in decent cardio shape and can run 5 miles in 40 minutes. My strength is good and I feel good but I don't understand what is going on with my weight. Possibly since I haven't lifted heavily for a long time, maybe I'm holding on the extra water while my body adapts to the new routing. I'll keep at it, but it sure is frustrating. In my past life, I think I would have lost 4 or 5 by now instead of gaining. My muscle tone is better, but I'm not happy about all this weight. This is the heaviest I've been in over 2 years.

Answer: Are you feeling heavy? or is it just after weighing that you feel frustrated? So many things could be blamed for your weight fluctuation. Do you weigh often? It could be a fluke, or it could be a result of too much salt. Or maybe you're eating more than necessary. Here's what I would do...decrease your intensity but not the duration of your workouts -- exercise to create relaxation. Drink buckets of water. Eat 5 servings of fruits or vegetables every day. Eat lots of fibrous foods. Bring lunch to work, and eat at home, not out.
