Lose Weight without Bulking Up

Question: A friend of mine just asked me to help him lose a few pounds. We have a small gym in our town with a treadmill and a bike - but he hates to jog. He skates quite a bit. He is also afraid of "bulking up". I was planning on trying a strength training program of low weight higher reps - would this be appropriate? As well - any suggestions for the cardio end of things? Carrie

Answer: Carrie, You're right about the low-weight, high-rep approach. If he likes to skate, have him alternate skating with incline treadmill walks and biking workouts. This varied routine should keep him from getting bored and will condition him more completely.
