Mountain Bike Workout Plan

Question: I got a mountain bike for Christmas. Can you recommend a good exercise program to follow with it?! I live in the country and there aren't any flat roads to bike on, it's mostly gently rolling hills. There isn't any pavement either. I know it is good exercise, but could you give me ANY advice. Thanx a million, bike rider

Answer: Dear bike rider, Gently rolling hills are great for riding, especially because of the variety they offer. Ride in the hills a max of two times per week starting out, balancing it with flat road riding two other times per week. Since you don't have any flat roads, you could purchase an indoor bike trainer to simulate flat road riding. You put your bike on it and it stays stationary while you pedal. You could also ride a stationary bike at a local gym. The flats will help you strengthen your riding muscles more gradually and evenly. Once you've gotten up to speed, you can ride more in the hills. Stretching is essential. Happy Trails!
