Personal Trainer Career Path

Question: I am a college student who is studying to be a personal trainer. Do you have any advice on how I can really start to focus on my career as a trainer while I am in school? Do you have any advice on being a good trainer? fitness fanatic

Answer: Dear fitness fanatic, Depending on the school you're attending, try to take extra classes on training-related subjects: exercise physiology, nutrition, structural kinesiology, even psychology. Take advantage of the fact that you're at an educational institution with lots of people around who know a lot about how the body works. Ask questions, even if you're not in class. If your school doesn't offer a subject that you are interested in, find as many books on the subject as you can. On the internet, the ACE website is a great place to start. You can find other internet resources on my links page. A good trainer doesn't think so much about being a good trainer as much as how to best serve his or her clients. If you focus on them, and really care about what they want to accomplish, you'll be a great trainer.
