Safe Weight Loss

Question: How can I lose weight safely?

Answer: Most nutrition professionals agree that safe weight loss means losing no more than two pounds in a week. When considering your options for safe weight loss, your goal will be to reduce calorie intake and increase calorie expenditure.

For every 3500 calories you expend through exercise or calorie reduction, you should be able to lose about a pound. A safe weight loss goal is to eat an average of about 300 to 500 fewer calories a day to lose 1 to 2 pounds in a week while increasing the amount of exercise you do.

If you lose more than two pounds in a week, you will not only lose fat, but also water and muscle mass. Once you begin to lose muscle mass, you are no longer experiencing safe weight loss. In addition, as you lose muscle, your body becomes less efficient and you cannot burn calories as easily as before.

A safe weight loss plan should encourage healthy choices that allow you to maintain weight loss over time. Effective, safe weight loss programs include reduced calorie intake without eliminating foods from any specific food group, regular physical activity, medical care if you are using a special diet formula or product, and a plan to keep the weight off by maintaining healthy lifestyle habits.
