Treadmill Speed vs Distance

Question: I got a treadmill for my birthday this year. I have had it for about 2 months now and try to get on it for at least 30 minutes every night I can. Lately the front part of my ankle has begun hurting pretty badly about 15 mins. into my workout. If I lessen the intensity of my walk the pain goes away or lessens. Is it a bad idea to work out for longer and not so hard? I am trying to lose weight. shannon

Answer: Dear shannon, You're right to lessen the intensity and walk for longer, especially if your goal is to lose weight. The muscles which lift your feet while you walk are probably weak, but they'll get stronger as your endurance builds. Be sure and stretch those muscles, and the rest of your body, after every walk.
