Weight Loss for Children

Question: Hi, maybe you can help -- I have an 8 year old girl she was 10lbs. 22-1/2" at birth, now at age 8 she is 4'8" and weighs 130. She does not snack on candy or chips. She was always a big eater. What can I do to help her? I don't know if this will help but no one in the family is like this and we did have her thyroid checked. Tammy

Answer: Tammy, Although it is a little early in her life to make weight an issue with her, you should consult a pediatrician to better determine the cause of such excessive weight gain and to rule out any other physical complications. It may be possible that the cause is psychological. Involve yourself with your daughter's exercise, if only to go on walks in the woods to gather leaves -- you can probably think up some other fun activities based on her interests. This will get her excited about exercise, and help to make it a life-long habit.
